With the world going wireless there’s more information floating around the airwaves than ever before. Unfortunately, this makes it far easier for hackers to access your personal information. Not exactly encrypting but something they refer to as stenography. If you have a text message that contains sensitive information it can be hidden inside of a picture for instance. Digital certificates and private/public key pairs are managed with a public key infrastructure. The holder of the private key will be the only person able to decrypt your message.
Encryption at Its Best
Encryption can now be done with an entire disk if you so choose. Some systems even give you the ability to basically hide a disk within the disk. Anyone else using the disk will only see the information in the false disk. Both performance and security can be realized by using a combination of symmetric encryption and asymmetric. You have to be careful however because sending an EFS file through the network can be picked up by hackers using a sniffer. Passwords are a great way of protecting just about any file but they have to be of such a nature that no one else can figure out what they might be. You also have to be able to remember your password without having it written down somewhere.
Be sure to utilize both share level and file level security and be sure to backup your files often and early.
